Is a new iMac in my future?

27" iMac (October 2009)Today, Apple released a whole slew of new product updates. The one I'm most interested in however, is the new iMac. I have been editing video, photos, and audio on a first generation 24" white iMac for three years now. It still gets the job done, but lately it seems a bit sluggish.

Three months ago it's hard drive failed, but I was able to replace it myself with the help of some online documentation. Since I was using Apple's built in Time Machine backup software, restoring the computer from my backup wasn't difficult at all. Also, for several years now I have experienced burn in on my iMac's screen. I did a little research and it seems a lot of the first 24" iMacs share the same problem. While annoying, I have learned to live with it and carry on with my life.

For about a year now, I have been contemplating what Mac to replace my current one with. As I have been taking on more hardware intensive projects like HD video editing and complicated After Effects rendering, I've wondered if it is time to just get a MacPro and call it a day. But I really like the portability of my iMac and for one price you get a computer and monitor.

Today when the new 27" iMac was announced I was pretty stoked for these two reasons:

  1. The top of the line iMac now comes with a quad core processor. This is fantastic because it greatly improves the performance of the machine.
  2. Also, you can now cram 16GB of RAM into the computer. (My iMac RAM is topped out at 3GB)

There are many more new features and improvements I could go on and on about, but I won't bore you with them. Lets just say, I'm impressed.

So, it looks like my next Mac will still be an iMac. Just a faster and more capable model!

I can't imagine how amazing a 27" screen would be on one of these bad boys. Thats getting awfully close to 30"!
